Real-world projects
Learn by building complete solutions as a team.
Participants put their skills to work on practical engineering projects that follow the full delivery lifecycle.
Learning through projects
Participants apply what they learn by building complete solutions.
Projects bring together people from different pathways into one team, much as a technology organisation would. Each person contributes from their specialisation while seeing how the whole system fits together.
Example project
AI-powered shopping assistant
A team develops a conversational shopping assistant for an online marketplace. Customers chat with the assistant to find what they need, and merchants reach customers through a new channel.
This is an illustrative example of the kind of project participants work on. It does not describe a live product.
Customers can
- Discover products
- Ask questions in natural language
- Receive product recommendations
- Interact in English, and potentially Luganda
- Connect with participating merchants
- Explore ordering and delivery options
The engineering journey
How the team takes the assistant from idea to production.
- 1
Requirements
The team works with a product owner to understand customer and merchant needs, then writes user stories and acceptance criteria.
- Software Engineering
- AI Engineering
- 2
Architecture
Engineers design how the chat interface, product catalogue, AI model and ordering services fit together, and record the key decisions.
- Software Engineering
- Cloud Engineering
- 3
Development
Features are built in sprints, with every change going through a pull request and code review.
- Software Engineering
- 4
AI integration
The team connects an AI model, grounds its answers in the product catalogue and explores support for Luganda as well as English.

- AI Platform Engineering
- 5
Testing
Automated tests check the application, and evaluations measure whether the assistant's answers are accurate and helpful.

- 6
Deployment
CI/CD pipelines test and release each change to cloud environments, with infrastructure defined as code.
- DevOps and CI/CD
- Cloud Engineering
- 7
Monitoring
Dashboards and alerts track performance, errors and usage, and the team responds to issues in production.
- Platform Engineering and SRE

Other kinds of projects
Practice across the industries technology serves.
Projects are set in realistic business contexts so participants learn to work with real-world constraints. Examples of the domains projects may cover include:
- Financial services
- Digital lending
- Logistics and transport
- Education technology
- Creative media
- Hospitality and retail
What participants take away
Work you can show, explain and build on.
Code in real repositories
Commits, pull requests and reviews that show how you work.
Design and documentation
Architecture diagrams, decision records and technical write-ups.
Delivery experience
First-hand experience of taking a feature from idea to production.
